The city of Oakdale has a variety of services and departments. The city of Oakdale is operated by a Mayor-Alderman form of government: a mayor, one council member elected at large and four aldermen elected by district:

Louisiana is the only state where the counties are called “parishes,” a division of territory used during the time of French and Spanish rule for religious and civil administration.

City Municipalities include a Fire Department and a Police Department.

The Allen Parish Court House is located in Oberlin, 15 miles from Oakdale.
